Little Kids Go Round and Round

As toddlers, we love to spin until we get dizzy and fall down. Some love it more than others, but I haven't met or had a kid yet who didn't do this at some point in their young, little lives. You've seen them, figuring out how to do nothing but take the steps that will turn them round and round and round. Or, you've been the parent who spun your child, reveled in the resulting giggle and laughed yourself as your child clamoured:

"Again, Daddy! Again, again, again!"

Children learn to spin themselves all over the place - on swings by twisting the links, on the sit-n-spins we buy them, on a slick tile floor as they lay on their back. There's something about feeling dizzy as a kid that makes us smile and feel free and floating....like we've finally figured out how to fly.

How we Get Dizzy

It's all about the ears

Inside our ears is a mechanism called the vestibular system that senses how fast our head is moving and in what direction. It works to maintain our balance by constantly sending this information to our brain. When we spin ourselves rapidly, the mechanism in our ear can't send signals fast enough for the brain to keep up and hence, we lose our balance.

Why We Spin Ourselves Dizzy

When spinning on a swing and looking up at the stars,
the only thing on our mind is the view of the sky.
We have not another care in the world.

Because we can. Just us,
our body, heart and soul
testing the laws
of nature.

To entertain ourselves.
We were not meant to be idle
for long and, when - as children -
we've sat still for more than a minute,
invisible gremlins crawl up our sides,
grab an arm and spin out the pent-up energy.

Yes, this is sweet and all, but are these the dizziest kids EVER? Nope. The dizziest kids ever are coming right up!

Get Dizzy and the NFL

Really, the NFL should consider the addition of a spinning rule before every kick-off. I think that would add a whole new challenge to the game.

Boy, golf, too, would have a whole lot more appeal if this was how it was played regularly.

Gees - and Not Just Kids!

But we can't let today's youth take all the credit, I suppose. Some of their role models and pets do a pretty good job of getting dizzy themselves.

The Big Payoff

Perhaps all that spinning will culminate in a future achievement. Like this young figure skater who created a brand new spin in Australia and was given the opportunity to name the spin herself. "Kayla's Catch" performed by the artist. She, however, has mastered the art of the spin without getting dizzy.

Kayla's Catch - a new skating spin

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME PRIVATE MESSAGES ABOUT THIS SPIN - I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THEM. This is an item from Channel 10 news on 24/8/07 about Kayla Doig, a skater from Queensland. At the Australian Figure Skating Championships she was given a bonus for having invented a new move and was told to give it a name. She also got a two point bonus. Nice to see figure skating get some coverage on Australian TV. Edited 19/2/08 - I have removed the comments and disable the comment feature.

Ever played a dizzy game or competition at a family function?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, of course. It's a traditional holiday event.

No way! (Although I've sometimes felt like we did.)

jaye3000 says:

Not at an event, but it is a daily household event! The kids love it, and I can't walk a straight line. lol ;)

Sojourn says:

I think I've been seriously missing out!

Your Thoughts

Are today's youth the dizziest kids ever?

This lens came at the right moment for me. I needed the giggle I got as I was watching all those kids spinning. Spinning was a huge part of my childhood and sometimes I think I spun out of control, thus some of the head scars.

I have never forgotten this, and doubt that I ever will.

From a kid on I was always hopeless at this and was dizzy in seconds. As an adult never tried it much apart from some party themes as am already dizzy enough with my ears.

Oh my goodness...I'm still laughing! What is it about seeing someone go daft that just makes me laugh 'til the tears run...? I have a friend who can't contain the laughter when she sees someone fall; she's not proud of her behavior but the absurdity of it just sets her off every time.

    You are a true master!

I am too old to do dizzy stuff. It is something in the inner ear! Years ago at a carnival, I rode a ride that went in circles and got really nauseated!
